Job Summary:
This position contributes to Pikeville Medical Center’s mission by overseeing the planning, organizing, directing, and supervising all hospital-wide employee development and education programs. Oversees and formulates hospital-wide educational /training curriculum, policies, and practices. Identifies health educational interest and needs of the community and directs hospital sponsored health educational
programs. Arranges for specialized instructional resources, provides input collaboration with community health programs and services.
Essential Functions:
1. Direct, administer and coordinate all activities of hospital education. Oversees daily operations of the education divisions to ensure appropriate administrative and clinical practices and services provided. Works directly with the Chief Nursing Officer to ensure proper educational guidelines and requirements are met.
2. Serve as a liaison between all hospital staff to ensure effective coordination of efforts to meet all educational requirements.
3. Direct the evaluation and coordination of educational and/or professional growth activities such as nursing learning experiences, Nursing Continuing Education and other programs.
4. Guide and direct director and other staff members in subject matters including, but not limited to, problem solving, goal setting and developing strategies for implementing and evaluating results of programs and/or projects.
5. Maintains effective employee relationships. Develops and implements appropriate staffing plans for assigned areas. Ensures staffing plans are complete and current and makes recommendations for changes in collaboration with the department director. Identifies and assesses needed qualifications and competencies for all department personnel.
6. Leads by example and serves as a mentor and role model for professional development.
7. Plans, organizes, directs, and supervises hospital-wide educational in-services/programs and formulates hospital wide educational/training policies and practices.
8. Identifies individual department educational/training needs and assists individual departments in curriculum development and organization of in-service and on the job training programs.
9. Structures an overall management development program for first line supervisors, managers, and directors, and conducts appropriate courses for the program.
10. Oversees the process and structure of hospital wide departmental orientation and development programs.
11. Oversees the operation of the allied health education affiliated programs.
12. Selects, trains/orients and assigns department staff (either directly or through subordinate supervisor). Develops standards of performance, evaluates performance, and initiates or makes recommendations for personnel actions.
13. Develops and recommends department operating budget and ensures department operates within budget.
14. Develops departmental goals and objectives and ensures that the department operates within budget.
15. Directs the preparation and maintenance of department reports. Prepares periodic reports for top management, as required. Responsible for compliance with JCAHO and all regulatory agencies for the education department and for the hospital wide education programs (including employee competency).
16. Provides consultation to hospital departments regarding education and training.
17. Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized, and functions under stressful situations.
